This is my artistic story.
I grew up in small town Saskatchewan on a grain farm. Family taught me the value of work ethic and no matter what you do give it your all. This gave me a solid base to draw from throughout my life.
I studied fine art at the University of Saskatchewan. I moved to Calgary, Alberta and put my art career on hold during my 20’s. It wasn’t until I had school-age kids that my focus came back to art. I needed some direction and inspiration. I started volunteering and creating art projects with students at my daughter’s school. The business concept was to have 20+ kids collectively paint a piece of artwork and then auctioning the painting at a fundraiser with the parents. It was a win win win concept. I was inspired artistically planning and preparing the artwork and most of all painting with the students. The kids loved creating the art. And the parents were excited to bid on the art at the fundraiser knowing they would receive a beautiful painting while giving funds to support their kid’s school. Over the past 16 years, I have volunteered and raised almost $500,000 for schools in the Calgary area. The highest bid to date is $10,000 for a single painting.
It was through this meaningful artistic experience with the school students I began to focus on my own art. I experimented with artistic styles and mediums and found my way to modern style plexiglass paintings. I knew one thing for sure, whatever I create I want it to make people feel good.
My process in creating plexiglass art is unconventional. I start with a visual picture in my mind then I prepare the plexi. Sometimes I get so excited with my idea I don’t even have time to write out the concept and I just start painting. Plexiglass comes with a protective plastic film on both sides. I draw on the plastic then I cut out pieces of the plastic and paint on the glass while it lays flat. My process is essentially painting the piece backwards. Since Plexi is clear my brushstrokes and paint show through the clear glass to the front side. Once the painting is finished I add a protective sealant and attach hanging materials to the back of the painting.
The versatility of painting with Plexi are endless. I’m always inspired by new paints and mediums as well as etching the glass, cutting & layering, adding neon, collage, painting both sides of the glass – the ideas are endless.
I love what I do and do what I love. My purpose is to bring that loving feel-good feeling to you through my artwork.

“We just wanted to reiterate our thanks to you for everything you have done to help us fundraise with the painting projects- we initiated our online auction on Friday, November 30th and in the first few days over $12,000 has been generated from bids! Not only did this project help raise critical funds for the playground, but it also got students and parents to delve into their artistic sides, creating awareness of the importance of the arts and confidence that anyone can be an artist! Thanks again Chlan.”– Kristy & Kathryn, Elboya School Fundraiser
